Residents invited to review new public art proposal

A large bronze and steel gull sculpture is being proposed for installation near Fletcher Cove Park’s northern entrance.

The sculpture was donated to the city by residents Peter House and Carol Childs, who have suggested the gull be mounted to a tall curving armature and base, much like a seagull flying over the crest of a wave. It is currently being reinforced and treated for ocean air by local artist Robert Rochin.

The proposal calls for the sculpture to be placed behind the northern retaining wall among the landscaping, at no cost to the city.

The City Master Arts Policy requires all public art to be reviewed by the City Council, considering a recommendation from the Public Arts Advisory Commission (PAAC). Public comment must also be received during a 45-day review period.

The public review period for this proposal opened July 10 and will end Aug. 25. The community can submit comments on the design and location to Anita Edman, the city’s art liaison, by e-mailing aedman@cosb.org or calling (858) 720-2454.
