Sobriety checkpoints will be held tonight in the North County and the East County, according to the Sheriff’s Department. In Encinitas, a checkpoint will be set up from 7:30 tonight to 1 a.m.
Public safety clause cited in decision
Despite repeated past statements that the condition of the North Torrey Pines Bridge poses no threat to public safety, the city of Del Mar is nonetheless using an emergency safety clause in the city’s noise ordinance to perform nighttime work during the bridge’s upcoming rehabilitation.
As more research shows the worlds’ oceans are deteriorating, the West Coast is taking a united stand for ocean health.
The governors of California, Oregon and Washington pledged to better protect and manage the ocean and coastal resources when they signed the West Coast Governors’ Agreement on Ocean Health in 2006.
A memorial fund has been set up in the memory of a beloved piano teacher who taught in Del Mar for more than 30 years.
Barbara Schneiderman, who taught the Suzuki method of piano out of her Del Mar home since the early 1970s, passed away in June from pancreatic cancer. Two parents of her students wanted to create a lasting legacy in her memory, so they set up a scholarship fund through the Coastal Community Foundation, an organization founded 20 years ago to be a resource for the coastal communities of San Diego to allow funds to be set up for a wide array of interests.

The party’s over for about 4,200 Del Mar and Carmel Valley kids. Monday, Aug. 25 marks the first day of classes for the Del Mar Union School district and its eight elementary school campuses.
It’s not just the start of another school year but also the dawning of a new era in the district. This will be the first school year in a decade that the district will open without Tom Bishop as school superintendent.

Disappointed in letter
I was troubled by, and sincerely disappointed in, the letter published in the Del Mar Times Aug. 15 by Mr. Volicek, a member of Del Mar’s Finance Committee. Mr. Vorlicek, whom I recruited to this committee, asked in accusative tones why the city of Del Mar is required to pay $500,000 annually to meet the requirements of the state mandated clean water program. He suggests that we can avoid these costs by some manner or another, and we have failed to do so. It is not so.

Over the past two years, this column has given you the status of the Garden Del Mar project, proposed at the southeast corner of Camino del Mar and 10th Street. The project has undergone a rigorous review by a citizen’s committee, by the Planning Commission, the Design Review Board and the City Council. On August 4, the council voted unanimously to approve the Garden Del Mar Specific Plan.
