Whooping cough cases reported

Two children in San Diego County contracted whooping cough and may have exposed the highly contagious disease to others at two camps, county health officials said Thursday.

Infected were 9- and 6-year-old siblings, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.

The older child attended a music and drama camp at Village Church in Rancho Santa Fe, and both of the infected youngsters took part in the KidsGames sports camp at North Coast Calvary Chapel, according to the HHSA.

Notices were sent out to about 130 people who may have been exposed to whooping cough, according to the health department.

Neither of the children was immunized against the disease.

“It (is) extremely important for parents to ensure that they and their children are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases,” said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the county’s deputy public health officer.

“Whooping cough is a concern because it can be passed to infants, who are at highest risk of complications and too young to be fully vaccinated with pertussis vaccine,” Sidelinger said.

Whooping cough, which can be treated by antibiotics, usually starts with flu-like symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, fever and a mild cough.

Symptoms can last up to two weeks and may be followed by severe coughing fits and vomiting.

There have been 28 cases of whooping cough in San Diego County so far this year. In 2007, there were a total of 50 cases.
