UCSD 33rd Annual Pumpkin Drop

Dow Jones (the pumpkin) weighed 650 lbs. and was dropped at 12:30 from the 11th floor of a dorm. Following the drop, an assortment of candy was thrown and student rushed to get the sweets.

Gunshots awaken residents; no suspects found

Residents in Carmel Valley’s Pacific Highlands Ranch neighborhood were awakened by gunshots around 2 a.m. on Thursday night, followed by a helicopter circling the area for hours.

Officials say increase water conversation immediately

The state’s decision to severely limit water deliveries to Southern California next year means San Diego County residents need to increase conservation efforts immediately, officials said today.

The California Department of of Water Resources allocated 15 percent of what water agencies requested for the next year.

UCSD biologists discover motor protein that rewinds DNA

Two biologists at the University of California, San Diego have discovered the first of a new class of cellular motor proteins that “rewind” sections of the double-stranded DNA molecule that become unwound, like the tangled ribbons from a cassette tape, in “bubbles” that prevent critical genes from being expressed.

UCSD Extension offers grants to help unemployed residents

UC San Diego Extension will dole out a total of $100,000 in grants to help San Diego residents who are unemployed participate in career seminars, it was announced today.

The first 500 San Diego residents who are on unemployment and apply online may enroll at no charge for up to three career seminars offered by UCSD Extension, according to the university.

Economic forecast remains negative

Weighed down by instability in the housing market, the outlook for the San Diego region’s flagging economy remains negative through at least the first part of next year, a University of San Diego economist reported Thursday.

Local sewage spill; contamination warning

A sewage spill in the North City area prompted a contamination warning along a stretch of ocean shoreline in neighboring Del Mar today, authorities said.
