Cafe Positano owner trades daily grind for a fresh coffee

Making a great cup of coffee is a much more complex process than adding hot water to ground-up beans.

“The thing about coffee,” said Tim Cusac, owner of Cafe Positano, “from the time that it’s grown to the time it ends up in your cup there are hundreds of ways to spoil it.”

Horizon Prep hosts Spirit Bowl 2008

Horizon Prep held its fifth annual Spirit Bowl Friday, Oct. 24. The event raises money for Camp Alandale, a mountain camp for abused and neglected children. Padres players Trevor Hoffman and Doug Sutherland were on-site to provide some motivating words to the eight flag football teams from other local schools that competed.

Helen Woodward Center hosts pet costume contest

The 18th Annual Spooktacular People Pet Walk was held on Saturday, October 25 at the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe. Dogs played at the carnival and agility course. For people there were tours of the animal hospital. And pets and people alike dressed up for a fun costume contest and a one- to two-mile walk. The event raised funds for the animal center.

Torrey Hills fall festival fun for all

Torrey Hills’ fall festival was a big success with neighbors coming out to enjoy bounce houses, balloons, candy and music. The event’s dog adoption was also successful with many pets finding new homes.

Program putting the green in school lunches

Sage Canyon School is getting greener. This month the school started their Eco Kids program, getting students involved in the recycling process every school day.

The Del Mar Union School District started their green campaign last year with Del Mar Hills Academy taking the lead, but Sage Canyon didn’t have anyone to run their school’s program. Parent Teresa Miller, president of the school’s Kids Korps chapter, stepped up this year to run the green initiative with help from fellow parent Rebecca Twoney.

The Carmel Valley Community Planning Board’s youngest member, 25-year-old John Fiske, said that joining the board was like coming full circle.

Too often we as American citizens take a “wait and see” attitude towards events. We go about our daily lives, assuming and hoping that someone else will take care of things – someone in city hall, or the state capital, or in Washington.

On Oct. 9 the Santa Fe Christian Schools’ chapter of National Honor Society held its third annual induction ceremony, where 29 students were inducted into the society.

National Honor Society recognizes outstanding high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship, and character.
