Gas price average slips below $2

The average price of a gallon of self-serve unleaded gasoline in San Diego County dropped below $2 for the first time since January 2005 today, decreasing 2 cents to $1.985.

DMVA putting positive spin on retail season

Faced with the expectation of a difficult holiday retail season, the Del Mar Village Association (DMVA) is looking to brighten the spirits of both merchants and residents while getting a few more shoppers into stores.

Local woman faces embezzlement charges

A former volunteer bookkeeper for Solana Beach and Rancho Santa Fe Girl Scout troops faces embezzlement charges after allegedly admitting she stole thousands of dollars from the groups, a sheriff’s official reported today.

Janet Daily, 36, was arrested on Saturday, financial-crimes Sgt. Mark Varnau said.

Holiday closures

Courts and all San Diego city, county and state offices will be closed tomorrow for Thanksgiving.

County, state and federal offices and courts will also be closed on Friday. San Diego city offices will be open on Friday.

Golf carts legalized for eastside streets in SB

Residents on the east side of Solana Beach will soon be able to legally drive their golf carts on most streets to and from the Lomas Santa Fe Executive Golf Course.

Despite their ubiquitous use on streets east of Interstate 5, golf carts are not street-legal vehicles under state traffic laws. However, local jurisdictions can approve their use on streets within one mile of a golf course, marked 25 miles per hour and can cross higher-speed streets safely.

Del Mar feels effects of weak economy

Despite a decline in Del Mar’s two main revenue sources, city officials say they’re monitoring the numbers but aren’t in a situation where cuts are needed.

While sales tax and transient occupancy tax revenues dropped in the first quarter of the fiscal year, the city’s major revenue source – property tax – remained stable, according to the financial report given to the council Nov. 17.

Incorporation measure passes

A residents’ initiative to limit the Rancho Santa Fe Association’s involvement in future incorporation efforts passed by a landslide on Nov. 17.

Of the 1,221 valid ballots cast, 875 favored the bylaw amendment and 346 opposed it, reported General Manager Pete Smith. This represents about a 60 percent voter turnout rate.

Supervisors call for solar buy-back incentive

A unanimous San Diego County Board of Supervisors vote Nov. 18 directed the county’s chief administrative officer to amend the county’s legislative program to add county-sponsored legislation which would give residential solar energy customers the ability to sell surplus generated energy to local utility companies.

Utilities commission president asks for Powerlink OK

On Nov. 18, California Public Utilities Commission President Michael Peevey released a proposed decision to approve the Sunrise Powerlink’s southern route alternative without conditions.

Peevey said his proposed decision will make it easier for the 123-mile renewable energy “superhighway” to develop without delay and that the line is the best way to reach the state’s goal of 33 percent renewable energy by 2020.
