Proposed stem cell research center in TP may collapse

A much-ballyhooed plan to build a $115 million stem cell research center in Torrey Pines may collapse because of the bad economy, it was reported Friday.

The nation’s financial woes, coupled with California’s budget crisis, is making it difficult for San Diego’s stem cell consortium to secure the loans needed to build the center, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The average price of self-serve unleaded regular gasoline in San Diego County rose three-tenths of a cent per gallon Thursday to $2.102, 2 cents more than last week.

Nature center to open

New sanctuary is educational and green

The recently completed San Elijo Nature Center will celebrate its grand opening Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony and then enjoy guided nature walks, live animal presentations, children’s activities and tour the new educational facility.
