Lacrosse league gears up for season

Local lacrosse league Donny Lax, is kicking off the 2009 season with a player/parent meeting at Cathedral Catholic High School on Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. Donny Lax’s goal is to provide a positive learning environment that emphasized team play, individual skill development and sportsmanship.

Donny Lax will also host a free lacrosse clinic on Monday, Jan. 19 at 9 a.m. at Cathedral.

Boys in grades fifth through eighth compete within the San Diego County Lacrosse Association. Practices begin in mid-February and games start in early March.

While the league has only been part of the county association for two years, its teams made it to the playoffs and sent several players to the all-star game. The league boasts a strong coaching corps that includes pro-lacrosse player Tobey Boucher and Michigan high school standout Tim Nelson.

This year two new coaches are joining the league: Gordie Mapes and Casey Price. Mapes played for national powerhouse Syracuse and was recently inducted into the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Price played defense at Notre Dame and is considered one of San Diego’s top youth coaches.
