Philanthropy Spotlight: Patrons of the Prado

Started in 1997, the Patrons of the Prado aim to raise money for the benefit of the arts organizations and museums on the Prado of Balboa Park. To date, the organization has raised and donated more than $1.4 million dollars in unrestricted funds.

The founders of the organization gifted funds to 11 museums, including the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, the San Diego Historical Society, the Museum of Photographic Arts and The Old Globe, so that everyone in the community could benefit from the art and culture their programs and services offer.

Each year, three museums are chosen to receive the funds raised that year, and these funds are divided equally. Each year, the funds have increased substantially over the previous year. The 2009 recipients will include the Timken Museum of Art, the San Diego Junior Theatre and the San Diego Natural History Museum.
