What is that?: A ski board

The summer before sixth grade, Will Appleby was tinkering in the garage when he came across an old pair of his mother’s skis. He decided to take the wheels off his skateboard and put them one of the skis and the ski board was born.

“At the time I was not aware what a level was,” Appleby said.

The ski board is full of holes from where he tried different positions for the wheels, so there isn’t too much sag, but just enough to carve down the hilly streets of Rancho Santa Fe or cruise around Pacific Beach.

The beat-up ski has seen a lot of love in the past seven years, made appearances in the Fourth of July parade, and always been a one-of-a-kind conversation starter.

“Everyone asks ‘what is that?’” Appleby said.

These days, Appleby’s little brother Andrew has been riding the novel rig around town while he is away at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas. The 2008 Torrey Pines graduate is pursing a degree in entrepreneurial studies there, and has his eye on professional golf.

Still, he said it’s good to have a backup plan and the ski board may be a viable option. To this day, Appleby has not seen anything else like it and is considering patenting his design. He said he will probably have to wait until he has time this summer to work on it, but hey, what better time for a cool summer invention to go pro eight years later?
