Local dean joins Obama administration

Peter Cowhey, Dean of the UC San Diego School of International Relations and Pacific Studies has been named to a senior position in the Obama administration’s Office of United States Trade Representative (USTR).

During a one-year leave of absence from UCSD Cowhey will serve as Senior Counselor to the U.S. Trade Representative focusing on strategy and negotiations.

Bon Appetit comes to Grand Del Mar

More than 70 San Diego foodies gathered at the Grand Del Mar on Feb. 8 to celebrate the publication of the “Bon Appetit Fast Easy Fresh Cookbook” with author Barbara Fairchild, editor-in-chief of Bon Appetit.

This was her only San Diego appearance of the book tour.

County’s economic outlook bleak

A historic fall in San Diego’s leading economic indicators — including building permits, unemployment and wants ads –continued in January, leading to a “bleak” outlook for the months ahead, a University of San Diego professor said today.

County officials receive passing grades on environment

Elected city and county of San Diego officials earned mostly passing grades for their voting records on water quality and environmental issues in two studies released Thursday.

The 2008 Water Quality Report Card examined the performance of San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and the City Council on issues involving coastal waters and marine habitat and gave them an overall mark of B-plus.

Week in sports: Torrey Pines girls soccer keeps league record perfect

Girls soccer:
Torrey Pines completed its perfect Avocado League title run with two wins in the last week of theå regular season.

The defending San Diego Section Div. I champion Falcons defeated La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad 3-2 on Feb. 19 and Escondido 1-0 a day later.

SFC title hopes dashed

On Feb. 3, the Santa Fe Christian Eagles (19-8, 6-2) boys basketball team lost to the Army-Navy Academy 60-52. All SFC had to do on Senior Night, Feb. 20, at the Solana Beach school, was beat ANA in their rematch to be co-champions of the Costal League North.

But, in a back-and-forth contest that was still up in the air going into the last quarter, ANA Warriors’ Rafael Rodriguez and Derrick Buchanan put on a two-man show scoring a combined 53 points beating the Eagles 61-49.

Del Mar considering reducing racing days this summer

Del Mar racetrack officials are considering possibly reducing the number of days of the 2009 race meet. Currently, the race meet is scheduled for 43 days, from July 22 to Sept. 9.

UCSD medical pioneer dies

Robert M. Winslow, MD, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) and the VA San Diego Medical Center, and founder of San Diego biotech company, Sangart, Inc., passed away at his home on February 2 after battling brain cancer. Winslow, 67, was a pioneer in the field of blood substitutes and high-altitude physiology.

Many ESC programs will now rely on fundraising

Nineteen teachers will be laid off in the Del Mar Union School District after the Board of Trustees voted for the cuts 4-1 in an effort to balance the budget; but they said they would to do their best to preserve the Extended Studies Curriculum.
