JV Falcons make school history
The Torrey Pines Falcons boys junior varsity basketball team has been on a winning streak. Last season, the team went 23-0. This season, the team is 27-0, and 7-0 in the Avocado League.
The Torrey Pines boys junior basketball team sweated out a hard fought 45-44 road win at Escondido recently. Torrey Pines improved to 27-0 overall and 7-0 in the Avocado league with the win. The current members of the team now have won an amazing 50 straight games over the past 2 seasons.
Torrey Pines led 43-28 with 6 minutes to play in the contest when Escondido went on a 13-0 run to pull within 2 points. Franklin Cooley calmly made two free throws with 8 seconds left to give Torrey Pines a 4-point lead and Escondido hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to account for the final score.
Jesse Neugarten led the winners with 11 points. Jered Wood added 9 points for Torrey Pines and C.J. Vafiadis chipped in with 8 points and 7 steals for the Falcons.
Joe Bridges led Escondido with 9 points.
Torrey Pines can clinch at least a tie for the Avocado League Title with a home win against 2nd place Mission Hills (6-1) in the next contest.
The team won an easy victory Feb. 3 against the San Pasqual Eagles by the score of 76-23.
“We continued this amazing streak with an easy win,” Falcons JV Head Coach Jonathan Moore said. “Our team was up 32-7 after one quarter and 48-17 at the half. The starters have never lost a game at Torrey. We had four guys in double figures. C.J. Vadiafis and Franklin Cooley with 14 points each, Blake Hansen with 12 points including four three-pointers, and Scott Mainquest with 10 points and 7 boards.”
The five players who have never lost a game on both freshmen and JV football and basketball are C.J. Vadiafis, Kevin Cuff and Scott Mainquest, captains of the JV basketball team, Marcos Caballero and Kyle Ross.
“Last season’s group went 8-0 on the Freshmen Football team,” Coach Moore said. “Two games in 2007-08 were canceled due to the wildfires. This season the group went 10-0 on the JV Football team. They are on a two-sport winning streak of 65 contests without a loss.”
“I think it is the longest streak in Torrey Pines or C.I.F. basketball history. The Poway wrestling team won 110 straight matches. We have incredible kids with so much heart. I can’t measure it. It is an amazing streak with amazing kids. I am so proud.”
There have been a few close calls this season. The Falcons were down by 2 points going into the fourth quarter against their rival La Costa Canyon on Jan. 6, 2008, in the Championship game at the St. Augustine Tournament, but won by eight points.
Also, Torrey Pines was down 16-0 to Lincoln in the semi-finals of the Mt. Miguel Tournament and won by 17 points, 61-44. They just beat Otay Ranch 59-56. And on Jan. 30, against La Costa in an Avocado League game, the Falcons were down two points with three seconds left to play.
“Kevin Cuff of Torrey Pines made a lay-up with two seconds remaining to send the game into overtime,” Coach Moore said. “The Falcons forced 15 second-half turnovers and 28 overall with their full-court press. T.P. outscored LCC 4-2 in OT, with sophomore C.J. Vadiafis scoring all the falcons points 59-57.”
The Falcons have five more Avocado League games, the last on Feb. 20 at La Costa.
