Time running out for delinquent tax filers

The California Franchise Tax Board Monday began sending notices to 55,980 individuals in San Diego County who earned income in 2007, but failed to file state income tax returns for that year.

More than 900,000 delinquent tax filers throughout California have 30 days to file their state tax return for 2007, or show why one is not due, according to the Franchise Tax Board.

When a required return is not filed, the FTB issues a tax assessment using income records to estimate the amount of state taxes due. That assessment includes interest, fees and penalties.

The FTB identifies nonfilers by using more than 350 million income records it gets from the Internal Revenue Service, banks, employers, state departments and other sources.

The FTB also uses occupational licenses and mortgage interest payment information to track down individuals who have not filed a state income tax return.

Last year, the Franchise Tax Board collected more than $550 million by pursuing those who had not filed state income tax returns.

For those receiving notices, information is available online at www.ftb.ca.gov by searching for “Request/Demand for Tax Return” or by calling
(866) 204-7902.
