Carmel Valley Stingrays strong in championship game
The Carmel Valley Stingrays Basketball Club’s under-10 fourth-grade team came within two points of winning the San Diego Sol League championship two weeks ago.
The Stingrays took first place in the regular winter season and just lost the championship game 30-28 to Spring Valley’s AK Rebels, one of the top under-10 teams in the nation.
Demetrius Laffitte, who coached 13 seasons at Cathedral Catholic (and University of San Diego High School), founded the year-round Stingrays club in 2004. It was Laffitte’s goal to promote basketball in Carmel Valley and Del Mar to players ages 6 to 14.
The Stingrays have six teams and practice at Cathedral Catholic. All coaches are former collegiate players and are on the high school’s basketball staff.
The Stingrays are gearing up to start their spring season in a few weeks, and roster spots are still available for players ages 8 to 13.
