Resident named Woman of the Year

Rancho Santa Fe resident Justice Susan Huguenor is the 75th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year.

Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, R-San Diego, honored her at a special assembly at the state Capitol in Sacramento on March 16.

Huguenor is San Diego’s presiding Juvenile Court justice and led the San Diego delegation at the California Blue Ribbon Commission’s recent summit on foster care.

“Judge Huguenor has established a standard of excellence and compassion,” said Fletcher in a news release. “It is evident to anyone watching that she cares about the children who come into her courtroom, and the additional commitment she has made as a member of the state Blue Ribbon Commission is proof of her investment.”

Huguenor said she was pleased not only to be honored but also for the focus the award brings to the foster care system.

“I am hopeful that through promising policies and practice we can strengthen families, support case workers, infuse cultural competency throughout the system and better prepare our foster youth for the independent and productive future they deserve,” she said in the release.

Huguenor was appointed as a judge in 1985. Before that, she worked as an attorney for the city of San Diego and as an elementary school teacher. Since 2003, she has served as the presiding judge of the juvenile court, hearing juvenile dependency cases and mental health and truancy cases.

The California Woman of the Year ceremony was started in 1987 to help commemorate Women’s History Month. The event has become one of the capital’s most anticipated celebrations of community service each year.
