‘Alternative spring break’ brings help to SDJA garden

A group of college students from several East Coast schools visited the San Diego Jewish Academy on March 18 to help redesign the school’s nine-station educational garden.
The students belong to an environmental education organization that collaborates with Hillel organizations to recruit and fund college students for alternative spring break programs.
The group, Pennsylvania’s Jewish Farm School, visits various farms around the country “to practice and promote sustainable agriculture and to support food systems rooted in justice and Jewish traditions.”
Two groups are spending their alternative spring break working on the nonprofit farm Tierra Miguel Foundation in Pauma Valley.
While there, they are visiting Levana’s Garden at SDJA to help redesign the garden so it produces food to serve in the academy’s new salad bar and nutritious lunch program.
