Week in Sports: DeNato leads way for Falcons baseball
Baseball:
Just three weeks into the season, Torrey Pines’ Joey DeNato appears to be in midseason form.
The junior outfielder/pitcher continued his red-hot start at the nonleague North County Tournament, where the Falcons have won two of their first three games.
DeNato upped his tournament average to .500 (6 for 12) on March 27, when he had three hits including two doubles to lead the Falcons to a 14-0 shellacking of San Marcos.
DeNato is batting .545 for the season (12 for 22) with five doubles, seven runs scored and four RBI.
Earlier in the tournament, DeNato had two hits including a double in a 12-0 drubbing of Orange Glen of Escondido on March 23. He was 1 for 3 with a double in an 8-3 loss to Ramona on March 25.
The Falcons are batting .292 overall for the season as a team and .394 (41 for 104) in the tournament.
Falcons second baseman J.J. Reading is batting .400 (4 for 10) with a homer, two doubles and eight RBI, and has drawn eight walks.
The Falcons have gotten excellent pitching, too.
Josh Sabourin struck out six in six innings of one-hit ball for the win in the San Marcos game, combining with Alex Tukey on a two-hitter.
DeNato struck out seven batters and allowed no walks in four innings of one-hit ball against Orange Glen, combining with Andrew Goodman on a two-hit shutout.
Cathedral Catholic High School bounced back from its first loss of the season with a vengeance.
The Dons saw their seven-game winning streak to start the season snapped with a 3-2 nonleague loss to Scripps Ranch of San Diego on March 24.
Then they left nothing to chance in a 12-1 romp of San Diego in a City tournament game two days later.
Tommy Cheek was 2 for 3 with three RBI to lead the Dons. Daniel Camarena was 2 for 2 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored, and Ryan Wilckins was 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI.
Danny Tyson pitched four innings of shutout ball for the win as the Dons improved their overall record for the season to 8-1.
Softball:
Red-hot Torrey Pines extended its winning streak to six games with a 4-0 victory over Rancho Buena Vista of Vista in a Falcon Fiesta tournament game on March 28.
The Falcons recorded their fourth consecutive shutout as they won for the 10th time in 11 games to start the season.
Lauren Hynes pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out nine batters while allowing three walks.
Hynes helped herself with two hits, and Lauren Filicia had a run-scoring double and scored a run to lead the Falcons.
Sydney Gerbacht pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out seven batters and allowing one walk to lead the Falcons to an 8-0 victory over Oceanside in a March 26 tournament opener.
Hynes had two hits including a double, and Kristen Filicia had a double and two RBI.
The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 5-3.
Boys volleyball:
Cathedral Catholic won the Gold Division of the Beach City Invitational at La Jolla High on March 28.
The Dons defeated Beckman of Irvine 2-0 (25-13, 25-18) in the title game.
The Dons went 7-0 in the tournament to improve their overall record for the season to 12-4.
Senior outside hitter Chase Baker was named tournament MVP.
Others who’ve made their mark include K.C. Rogers, who’s batting .375 (9 for 23) with a homer and seven RBI, and Shane Binhgam, who’s hitting .391 (9 for 23) with five RBI.
Boys lacrosse:
Torrey Pines defeated Santa Fe Christian 13-7 in a March 28 nonleague game.
Sean Doyle, Erik Myers and Hap Knowles each scored four goals for Falcons. Cam Schwartz added one goal and one assist, and Falcons goalie Alex Perkins recorded 19 saves.
The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 2-2.
Girls lacrosse:
Canyon Crest Academy defeated Monte Vista of Spring Valley 12-8 in a March 27 nonleague match.
Tiffany Su scored six goals and had two assists to lead the Ravens, who won their third straight game and their fourth in five games to start the season.
Nikita Aitken scored four goals to lead the Ravens to a 12-5 nonleague win against Santa Fe Christian 12-5 on March 24.
Lauren Rutledge had three goals and one assist for the Ravens, and Tace Higuchi added two goals and two assists.
The Eagles were led by Amy Robertson, who scored three goals and had two assists.
Track and Field:
Torrey Pines long distance specialist Megan Morgan took second place in the 3200 at the prestigious Asics Mt. Carmel Invitational at Mt. Carmel High on March 28.
Morgan clocked a 10:39.77, finishing second behind Rancho Bernardo’s Molly Grabill (10:36.43).
