SD water restrictions go into effect Monday

Mandatory water-use restrictions will go into effect Monday in San Diego following the City Council’s recent declaration of a “Level 2” drought alert.

To help prevent San Diego residents from being caught off guard, the city has enacted a “No Time To Waste–No Water To Waste” campaign to inform residents about the new rules.

Healey to retire as captain of SDPD’s Northwestern Division

Northwestern Division Capt. Kathy Healey will retire along with as many as 100 officers in the San Diego Police Department, due to city-imposed contract changes that affect retirement benefits.

Healey’s last day is May 31, ending a 33-year career in law enforcement and nearly two years as the Northwestern Division’s captain for Carmel Valley.

Two retire after long careers in teaching

Solana Vista Elementary School is bidding a fond farewell to two of its third-grade teachers, Rose Andrews and Tom Richardson, who are retiring at the end of this school year.

“Fast” is how Andrews summed up her 39 years of teaching in the Solana Beach School District. She began teaching at Central School in 1970 and taught at Skyline Elementary School for many years before coming to Solana Vista in 1982.

Plan outlines ways to disperse La Jolla seals

The city of San Diego on Friday filed a seal dispersal plan that outlines specific steps, including amplifying the sounds of barking dogs, to disperse harbor seals from La Jolla’s Children’s Pool should it be ordered to do so by the courts.

First-class teachers honored

Three outstanding teachers from Carmel Valley schools were named their district’s teachers of the year. Canyon Crest’s Brian Shay, Ocean Air’s Jim Gianola and Solana Pacific’s Paula Merrick now have to wait until Oct. 10 to see if they will rank in the county’s top five at the Salute to Teachers awards ceremony.

Service members, past and present, honored

Veterans were honored during a Memorial Day ceremony at La Colonia Park on May 25.

More than 300 ‘Bring It!’ for stem cell research

More than 300 people showed up in “game show elegant” attire for Bring It!, and raised about $150,000 for stem cell research in an event hosted by the Head North Foundation and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research and held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in late April.

The foundation is working to “enhance the quality of life for people faced with the daily challenges of a spinal cord injury (SCI) by providing financial assistance, resources and guidance,” a press release stated.
