Chocolate Candy finishes fifth
There were no roses for Chocolate Candy on May 2, as Jenny Craig’s 3-year-old colt finished fifth in the 135th Kentucky Derby.
Chocolate Candy, ridden by Mike Smith, was squeezed between horses at the start of the 1 1/4-mile race and raced near the back of the pack for the first three-quarters of a mile. He had moved up to eighth by the time he reached the mile pole and went four wide around the turn heading into the stretch, but then seemed to lose momentum.
Chocolate Candy passed a couple more horses, but ended up about 13 lengths behind the winner, 50-1 long shot Mine That Bird.
“I thought I had a dynamite trip,” Smith said in an interview aired on HRTV’s “Pursuit of the Crown” show. “Thought I was the winner heading for home, to tell you the truth, for a second there, and he just really hung on me down the lane. He threw a fit in the gate today and I don’t know if that might’ve had something to do with it.”
According to the Blood-Horse magazine’s Web site, Chocolate Candy will head back to California and train up to the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes on June 6, the third leg of racing’s Triple Crown.
The Kentucky Derby is the first leg; the second, the Preakness Stakes, will be run on May 16 in Baltimore.
