Pads acquire Tony Gwynn Jr.

Padres Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers announced Thursday that they have acquired outfielder Tony Gwynn from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for outfielder Jody Gerut.

Gwynn, 26, has appeared in 38 games with Triple-A Nashville this season, hitting .308 (47-for-152) with eight doubles, one triple, one home run, nine RBI, 34 runs scored and 20 walks. Gwynn has hit safely in 32 of 38 games, reaching base in all but three contests.

Playing primarily in center field, Gwynn has also appeared in left field and right field this season. Over parts of three seasons with the Brewers Gwynn hit .248 and stole 14 bases in 130 Major League games.

The lefty outfielder was originally signed by Milwaukee as a second-round selection in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft out of San Diego State University. Gwynn graduated from Poway High School and is the third member of his family to play for the Padres, joining his father, Pads legend and current SDSU coach, Tony Gwynn and uncle, current Padres pro scout, Chris Gwynn.

Gwynn will be in uniform for Thursday night’s game against the Giants and wear number 18. His father wore the number 19 which has since been retired.

The trade is announced as the team continues talks with the Chicago White Sox regarding pitcher Jake Peavy who has a no-trade clause in his contract.
