MTS: Cuts in funding make prices rise

The price for a monthly transit pass and some routes will go up Wednesday, according to the Metropolitan Transit System.

According to the MTS, the fare hikes are needed to offset the elimination of $14.3 million in local transportation funding from the state.

New COASTER alcohol policy begins July 1

No open containers of alcohol will be permitted on COASTER trains after 9 p.m. as of July 1. This policy was approved by the NCTD Board of Directors at their June 18 meeting. The new policy aims to curb alcohol-related incidents on the COASTER.

Man booked on suspicion of burglaries

A man who allegedly broke into a car in Solana Beach was arrested, and deputies found items from other burglaries, a San Diego County sheriff’s sergeant said.

Blood bank awards donors free entries to 5k

The San Diego Blood Bank is offering blood donors a day of free food and entertainment.

Donors who give blood between Sunday, June 28, and Sunday, July 5, at any San Diego Blood Bank Donor Center or bloodmobile will receive two free entries into the 8th annual 5K Walk/Run presented by Ralph’s and Food 4 Less on Sunday, July 19.

Poll shows strong support for seals

At the opposite ends of the opinions on whether La Jolla’s seals should be pushed off the Children’s Pool beach are younger women and older men.

“A whopping three-quarters of women under the age of 35 strongly oppose” the city’s plans to remove the seals who occupy the beach, according to statistics compiled by Competitive Edge Research & Communication in a telephone survey of 504 people living in the city of San Diego. Men 55 years of age and older shared the opinion only 30 percent of the time.

Smoking ban goes into effect in San Dieguito River Park

A new no-smoking policy is now in place for the San Dieguito River Park, which stretches from the gateway at the lagoon in Del Mar to the crest of Volcan Mountain.

The Board of Directors of the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority approved the policy, following the lead of 14 other cities in San Diego County. The authority is a multi-jurisdictional agency formed to plan, create, preserve and enhance the San Dieguito River Valley Regional Open Space Park.
