Booze banned on beaches in SB

The Solana Beach City Council voted unanimously to make a temporary alcohol beach ban permanent May 27, after the trial ban successfully prevented increased drinking and related problems at Fletcher Cove.

The ban is effective 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The council adopted a one-year alcohol ban on the city’s beach in July 2008. At that time, the state and coastal cities were prohibiting alcohol on beaches throughout the county, leaving Solana Beach as one of the few places beachgoers could still drink.

The council adopted a temporary ban to prevent excessive alcohol consumption migrating to Fletcher Cove. It also wanted to be able to evaluate the results.

The trial period proved successful – the city avoided anticipated problems and misconduct associated with excessive drinking at the beach, according to the city’s lifeguards and the county Sherriff’s Department.

The permanent ban will go into effect before the temporary ban expires in July.
