Brazilian celebration coming to Del Mar

Samba music, Brazilian-style food and drinks will transform the Powerhouse on July 2 when the Young Global Philanthropists throw their “Celebração do Brasil” to benefit Karuna International.

The party will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. and includes a silent auction and performance by the band Sol e Mar.

Karuna International is a nonprofit that puts at-risk youth from low-income communities in San Diego through an eight-week global education curriculum. At the end of the My First Passport program, each student is eligible for an all-inclusive scholarship to volunteer abroad in a developing country for two weeks.

At the end of their volunteer experience, the scholarship recipients will join the Agents of Change youth committee and produce an art event to share their experience, increase cross-cultural awareness and raise money to reinvest in a social change project in their community.

Many of the YGP members behind the event are employees at Jake’s Del Mar, one of the event sponsors. Other sponsors are Sambazon, Sol e Mar Group, Vita Coco, Sagatiba, ConnectedSD, Wildfish Entertainment and Pacifica.

The Del Mar Powerhouse Community Center is at 1658 Coast Blvd. The suggested donation price is $50. For more information, visit www.karunaintl.org.
