Sheriff: Hot tub death not deemed suspicious

The cause of death of a 39-year-old woman found floating in the Del Mar Clarion Hotel’s hot tub might not be determined until the end of August, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.

Breta Bergin died on Sunday, July 12, at 7:20 p.m. after being resuscitated and rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital. She had been put on life support and given a poor prognosis.
The medical examiner’s office said it could take 45 to 90 days to complete the autopsy results.

Joyce Guthrie, a woman visiting Del Mar from New Mexico, was staying in a room next to Bergin’s, right in front of the hotel pool. She said a man calling for help awakened her at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 11. She went outside her room to see a man kneeling over a naked woman beside the hot tub.

The man, who identified himself to Guthrie as Jason and said he was Bergin’s friend, attempted CPR until paramedics arrived.

“He was quite upset, understandably, and appeared to be in shock, which we all were,” Guthrie said of Jason.

She said the emergency response took a long time and she was surprised that only one sheriff’s deputy responded and did not question anyone on the scene.

The sheriff’s department said that they are not investigating the case further, saying the death was not deemed suspicious, and the medical examiner’s office would only say the case was still open.

Guthrie said she felt that more needed to be done to find out what happened to Bergin, whose tragedy she said she would never forget.

“It was also very disheartening to see so many people standing at their windows or on the sidewalk as far away as possible but still close enough to see something,” Guthrie said. “People have an odd need to see tragedy but not act.”
