More hazardous driving tickets were issues in 2008

San Diego police issued 22 percent more tickets for hazardous driving in 2008 than in 2007, it was reported July 29.

Most of the 42,140 tickets issued in the city last year were for speeding, running red lights, sign violations, illegal U-turns and unsafe lane changes, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

In 2007, the city issued 34,420 tickets for hazardous driving, the newspaper reported.

In the first three months of this year, police have issued 11,393
hazardous-driving tickets, according to the Union-Tribune.

The increase in tickets comes as the number of police officers
patrolling San Diego streets is decreases.

There were 197 vacant officer positions in 2007 compared to 257 in 2008 and 288 as of last week, the Union-Tribune reported.

In addition, there are currently 1,839 officers employed by SDPD but
only 1,684 are available for duty because of injuries and other factors, according to the newspaper.
