North Shore team ninth at nationals

The North Shore Girls Softball League’s 12 Gold All Stars concluded their record-setting season their first to the ASA Western National Championships in Portland, finishing ninth in a field of 58 teams.

Teams were from Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico and Montana.

The North Shore girls had to battle 107 degree temperatures during the hottest week in recorded Portland history, a 6-3 record for the tournament.

Along the way North Shore Gold beat the Northern California champ, Belmont, 4-3: Central California runner-up Orcutt Renegades, 6-1, and four Oregon teams by the collective score of 39-6.

North Shore Gold lost tough one-run games to the Danville Stompers 2-1, the Lompoc Smashers 2-1 and finally to Los Alamitos 8-7 in an exciting 9-inning game.

It was the farthest any North Shore All Star team had ever gone in the League’s 21-year history.

North Shore 12 Gold finished the season 45-14, participating in seven championship games in 10 tournaments, including titles in the Torrance and North San Diego ASA District Championship tournaments.

At ASA Western Nationals North Shore 12 Gold was led by the pitching duo of Caitlin O’Farrell and Monroe Peed. Batting leaders include Kelsey Buchanan (.560), Hannah Gilliland (.538, 8 rbis, 9 stolen bases), Erin Champ (.471), and Kylie Robinson (.450), with Tierra Eshom, Avery Naughton and Mariel Cathcart all hitting .400 for the tournament. The North Shore 12 Gold team batting average at Nationals was an impressive .402.

North Shore 12 Gold finished the season with an on-the-field tribute by the San Diego Padres last Monday night at Petco Park.
