Teen killed in rollover crash in Fairbanks Ranch

A teenager was killed and several others injured in a single-vehicle traffic accident allegedly caused by a 16-year-old driver who lost control Sunday in Fairbanks Ranch, authorities said.

The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. in the 17000 block of San Dieguito
Road and resulted in the roadway being completely closed for about four hours, California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Newbury said.

A 16-year-old boy was driving a 1999 Lexus GL 470 that went off the
roadway on a curve and rolled over, Newbury said.

The officer said William Wardrip, a rear-seat passenger who wasn’t
wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the car. The 16-year-old Encinitas resident was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and three other passengers were unhurt but were taken to a
hospital for a precautionary evaluation because of the rollover, he said. A dispatcher with the Northcomm fire dispatching agency said three were taken to hospitals.

Alcohol or drugs were not factors, and it was unknown how fast the
driver was going when he lost control of his vehicle, Newbury said.

The crash comes just three weeks after 17-year-old Torrey Pines High
School student Alexander Michael Capozza died when a speeding car driven by a classmate went out of control and crashed in nearby Rancho Santa Fe.

That driver, also 17, is being prosecuted in juvenile court for gross
vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence.
