Kudos to local people making headlines

Two Bishop’s students noted

- Dante Vicino of Del Mar, a junior at The Bishop’s School, combined his love for skateboarding and woodworking to create a custom-board company, Inferno Boards.

Three years ago, while working in the family garage, Vicino began carving out different styles of longboards.

“The fun thing about making custom boards is that I can make anybody any design they want — as long as it’s rideable!” he said.

Using skills taught to him by his grandfather, a carpenter, Vicino has now hashed out eight custom boards from conception to finished product.

His creations are featured at www.infernoboards.com, a Web site he built with help from his computer science teacher, Irasema Triana.

Vicino insists his Inferno boards are just a hobby. His real interest lies in neuroscience, and he plans to pursue med school and become a neuropsychiatrist.

- Bishop’s School senior Janet Jeong of Del Mar recorded “Hands to Touch,” a CD of her violin solos, to benefit a South Korean charity. Proceeds from the CD will be donated to the Flower Village near Seoul, a convalescent home with adjoining orphanage, hospice and hospital.

Jeong traveled to South Korea in June and lived in the Flower Village for three weeks.

She said the experience gave her “a sense of gratefulness” and a desire to give back to the community through her music.

Jeong has played the violin for 13 years, including performances at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. She is associate concertmistress for the San Diego Youth Orchestra.

Jeong launched the sale of her CD at Bishop’s 23rd annual Grandparents’ Day on Nov. 23.

Thus far, she has raised $1,000 for Flower Village. The CDs can be ordered by sending a request to Jeong by e-mail at jeongj@bishops

  • What were the odds?
I think we’d all agree that no one should have to worry about being run over by a motor vehicle in their own shower. I’m a world class worrier but until it almost happened, it never occurred to me to worry that a stolen car would crash through our front fence and stop inches from joining me in the master bath. This wasn’t recent, fortunately, but it comprise […]
