Baja quake rattles S.D. region

A magnitude-5.9 earthquake in northern Baja California was widely felt Wednesday in the San Diego area.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries resulting from the temblor, which struck at 10:48 a.m. It was followed by at least eight aftershocks, the largest measured at 4.9.

Workers at San Diego City Hall felt the building sway for about 30 seconds. Detective Gary Hassen, a spokesman for the city Police Department, said he felt nothing but saw window blinds moving in his office.

It was reportedly felt as far north as the Orange County community of La Palma.

The epicenter of the quake was 23 miles southeast of Calexico, according to the Caltech Seismological Laboratory.
