Supervisor term limit measure qualifies for June ballot

San Diego County residents will get to vote this year whether to impose term limits on members of the Board of Supervisors, after it was certified Tuesday that enough petition signatures were collected to place the item on the ballot.

The Board of Supervisors certified that enough petition names were circulated to allow voters to decide at the June 8 primary if future supervisors should be limited to two four-year terms.

Supporters of the charter amendment, mostly affiliated with public employee unions, believe that board members have served for so long that they’ve lost touch with their constituents.

No new persons have been seated on the board since 1995. All five supervisors are Republicans.

The certification that enough valid signatures were collected was passed without comment by the supervisors, as part of their consent agenda.
