Former UCSD swimmer killed in Haiti earthquake

A former UC San Diego swimmer from Phoenix was among those killed in Tuesday’s massive earthquake in Haiti.

Daniel Ryan Kloos, 24, was volunteering at a children’s hospital where his sister worked when the magnitude-7.0 quake occurred, and five stories of the building collapsed, according to CBS8.

His sister, Erin, a former University of Washington swimmer, survived.

Friends of Kloos held a vigil at the campus to honor his memory, the station reported.

The American Red Cross has estimated the quake may have caused 40,000 to 50,000 deaths.
