Sharks U14 win tourneys

The Del Mar Carmel Valley Sharks Recreation League-Soccer All-Star Girls Division 3 (Under 14) won two tournaments in December. The team captured the title at the La Jolla Recreational All Star Tournament on Dec. 5-6 and the Mesa Rec All-Star Tournament Dec. 19-20.

In the La Jolla Tournament, the Sharks-Girls U14 beat Scripps Ranch Soccer Club, 1-0, and ended the weekend with a 4-0 record, having scored 10 goals and allowing only two goals scored against them. Coaches credited a “stellar defensive back-line and keeper and scoring power of our offense, Macenzi McGuire, Giulia Lanza-Billetta, and Ashley Ramirez.”

At the Mesa tourney it took the Sharks double overtime to beat the Carlsbad Wave, 2-1. They played nine games over the two days, with four wins, and a tie, which put them in Sunday’s semi-final match against the Poway All-Stars. Regulation ended with a 1-1 tie, followed by five penalty kicks by each team. Still tied, they went to a sudden death kickoff which ended on the 10th kick when Sage Pollack scored.

In the final against the Carlsbad team, the Sharks Elianna DeQuesada scored with minutes left to tie the game at 1-1 and force it to overtime. In double-overtime, she scored again to give her team the win.

  • Emotions tugged, tested in new Globe comedy about loss, Be a Good Little Widow
Bekah Brunstetter’s “Be a Good Little Widow” at The Old Globe is an interesting juxtaposition of happy and sad, reality and romanticism. The dialogue sometimes comes off as stilted, and I often felt that Melody’s character seemed very immature. However, the cast as a whole is terrific, and Hal Brooks’ direction centers the story well between the bookends of […]
