Falcons make final push for Avocado title

Boys basketball:

- An Avocado League title turned out to be all the incentive Torrey Pines needed for that extra crunch time push.

Trailing by 5 points going into the fourth quarter in a pivotal league showdown against La Costa Canyon, the Falcons rallied for a 57-49 victory in a regular season finale for both teams.

The Falcons, who two days earlier defeated San Pasqual 71-43, improved to 9-1 in league and 24-3 overall for the season.

The Falcons were awarded the No. 1 seed in the San Diego Section Div. I playoffs. They were scheduled to play host to Otay Ranch on Feb. 23 in a first round game.

Nick Kerr scored 21 points to lead the Falcons in the LCC game and Amir Begovic and Max Heller each added 11 points.

Heller also had four assists and two steals.

Kerr scored 15 points to lead Torrey Pines against San Pasqual. Jesse Neugarten contributed 12 points and Trever Derrett added 10 points.

The Falcons played 11 players in the San Pasqual game, of which 10 contributed in the scoring totals.

- Santa Fe Christian had to settle for a share of the Coastal League North title after the Eagles experienced their first league setback of the season, 62-55 to Army-Navy on Feb. 17.

Cade Gotta led the Eagles with 15 points and Karl Holmlund added 14 points.

The loss dropped the Eagles to 7-1 in league and 19-7 overall for the season.

- Cathedral Catholic snapped a three-game skid with a 60-51 Eastern League victory over Mission Bay of San Diego in a regular season finale for both teams.

Mathew Rosenburg scored 16 points to lead the Dons and Jack Enright added 14 points. Nick Madden contributed 10 points.

The Dons improved to 5-7 in league and 12-11 overall for the season.

- Canyon Crest Academy lost to Horizon 62-48 in a Coastal League South game on Feb. 17.

Ryan Kroner led the Ravens with 19 points. Max McCarthy contributed 15 points and Cory Osetkowski added 11 points.

The Ravens fell to 2-6 in league and 13-13 overall for the season.

- San Diego Jewish Academy had its three-game winning streak snapped when the Lions lost to San Pasqual Academy 49-38 on Feb. 16.

Two days later, the Lions concluded regular season play with a 53-43 loss to Preuss School.

Jacob Katz scored 14 points to lead the Lions in the San Pasqual Academy game, and Drew Ferris added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Katz led the Lions with 13 points in the Preuss game.

The Lions fell to 5-5 in league and 10-10 overall for the season.

Girls basketball:

- Torrey Pines had its four-game winning streak snapped as the Falcons lost to La Costa Canyon 63-41 in an Avocado League game on Feb. 19.

Two days earlier, the Falcons defeated San Pasqual of Escondido 77-48, avenging a Feb. 3 league loss.

Fantine Giap led the Falcons with eight points and Heather Serven added seven points in the LCC game.

Serven led the Falcons with 24 points in the San Pasqual game, and Kristen Nasella and Giap each added 11 points.

The Falcons fell to 7-3 in league and 17-9 overall for the season.

- Canyon Crest Academy concluded Coastal League South play with a 45-30 victory over Horizon.

Nicole Leonard and Julia Brew each scored eight points to lead the Ravens, and Tasha Quintana added seven points.

The defending San Diego Section Div. III champions improved to 4-4 in league and 18-9 overall for the season.

- Santa Fe Christian concluded regular season play with a 57-34 loss to Christian Life Academy in a nonleague game on Feb. 15.

Brittany Bushor scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Eagles.

Girls soccer:

- Torrey Pines extended its unbeaten streak to 13 games and completed an undefeated Avocado League campaign as the Falcons played to a 2-2 tie with La Costa Canyon on Feb. 19.

Two days earlier the Falcons defeated San Pasqual, 4-1.

Alexandra Bailey scored on an assist from Meghan O’Rourke and assisted Emily Jones on the other Falcons goal in the LCC game.

Falcons goalie Heather Schlesier recorded two saves.

Kory Spotts and Courtney Massimino each scored one goal and had one assist for the Falcons in the San Pasqual game.

Delaney Giacolone and Bailey each contributed one goal for the Falcons, and Mary Harrah had one assist.

Falcons goalie Hunter Rittgers recorded four saves.

The Falcons improved to 8-0-2 in league and 15-3-2 overall for the season.

- Cathedral Catholic defeated Christian of El Cajon 1-0 in a Western League finale for both teams on Feb. 18.

Kendall Krouse scored the Dons’ only goal, and goaltenders Karly Loberg and Lizzie Stabile combined for the shutout.

Boys soccer:

- San Diego Jewish Academy finished the Citrus West League season undefeated after defeating Guajome Park Academy 4-0 in a regular season finale for both teams on Feb. 18.

Sean Callahan scored two goals to lead the Lions, and David Guefen scored one goal and had one assist.

Irving Stone added one goal, and Ethan Laser contributed one assist.

Lions goalie Jorge Adler was credited with the shutout.

The Lions improved to 4-0 in league and 10-1-4 overall for the season.

- Cathedral Catholic clinched a Western League title with a 2-0 victory over Kearny in a regular season finale for both teams on Feb. 19.

The Dons improved to 9-1-1 in league and 16-3-3 overall for the season.
