Foundation’s ‘got ESC?’ campaign begins
By Chris Stevenson
President, Del Mar Schools Education Foundation
The Del Mar Schools Education Foundation’s Annual Appeal ran from Aug. 31, 2009, to Feb. 15, 2010, and brought in enough donations to cover approximately 10 full-time equivalent teacher positions for our Extended Studies Curriculum programs. This means that 10 DMUSD teachers will not lose their jobs thanks to your generous donations.
The foundation’s $2 million goal for this year was intended to raise enough funds to pay for approximately 17.5 FTE teacher salaries in the 2010/2011 school in order to maintain our ESC programs at their current levels. Since we did not meet our total goal by the Feb. 15 deadline, some teachers will be laid off and our ESC programs including science, music, art, technology and PE will be scaled back.
Because we believe these programs are a vital component of our children’s education, we requested and received permission from the Board of Trustees to create a second campaign for the 2010/2011 school year. Starting Feb. 18 and continuing through April 30, 2010, DMSEF will be actively campaigning for our ESC programs.
Last year, our ESC programs cost approximately $3.3 million in total, with the district paying $1.7 million and the community, through DMSEF, paid for the remaining $1.6 million of the teacher salaries for this extraordinary group of programs. The district portion is for the contractual obligation of teacher prep time. Your share covers the additional science, music, art, technology and PE program teacher salaries plus extras such as band, drama, student council, lunch clubs, etc., and is taught by credentialed specialists.
Please check your child’s backpack, the school Web sites, local newspapers and your e-mailboxes for further information. DMSEF is committed to working with our parents, principals, district staff and the Board of Trustees to maintain our ESC programs.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to challenge the 45 percent of our families who have not yet donated to DMSEF to demonstrate how much they value the enriched educational opportunities the ESC program offers to their children. All the teachers and administrators in the district have donated toward DMSEF. We can make our goal to keep ALL of our ESC programs for next year if everyone participates.
Please take the time to make an online donation at delmarkids.org and get ESC!
