Brees prepares for charity golf classic in May

Super Bowl champion quarterback Drew Brees held a press conference Tuesday, promoting the first Cox Celebrity Championship, which will be held at Morgan Run Resort & Club in Rancho Santa Fe from May 20 to 23. Brees will host the event.

The pro-am tournament will benefit Rady’s Children’s Hospital, San Diego Armed Services YMCA, Friends of Scott and the Brees Dream Foundation.

Brees Dream Foundation was founded by Drew and his wife, Brittany, to help improve the lives of cancer patients in all the cities where Brees has played: West Lafayette, Ind., home to Purdue University, San Diego and New Orleans.

Some confirmed celebrity golfers who will participate in this year’s tournament include: Trent Dilfer, Rollie Fingers, Olympian Dan Jansen, Jeremy Roenick, actor Ray Romano and Chris Harrison, host of The Bachelor/Bachelorette.

Brees hasn’t had much time to prepare for next month’s tournament as he just completed a USO/Armed Forces tour in Turkey, Dubai and Djibouti, Africa. He has also been busy spending time with his family and 15-month-old son Baylen, who shared in what Brees said was one of the best experiences of his life — holding his son up in the air after he won this year’s Super Bowl.

Despite not getting in much green time, Brees said he is determined to win his own tournament at some point.

Even as a pro-athlete he said one of the most nerve-wracking experiences is teeing off at a celebrity golf tournament with people lined up and down the fairway.

“You’re thinking, ‘Please don’t hit somebody in the head’,” said Brees, flashing a big grin.
