4.8 quake rattles East County

Seismic activity continued to rumble near the eastern edge of San Diego County, with an early morning 4.8-magnitude earthquake the largest of dozens of aftershocks recorded Thursday.

The 4.8 temblor struck at 3:20 a.m., with an epicenter about 40 miles south of the point where the San Diego-Imperial county line ends at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to scientists at Caltech in Pasadena.

Seismic analyst Anthony Guardino said the aftershock “was well within the the range of expected aftershocks” triggered by the magnitude-7.2 quake on April 4.

People reported to the USGS that they felt the quake near Lake Elsinore and in Hemet, San Diego, San Marcos, and Yuma, Ariz.
