Students plan movie for fundraiser
A group of local teenagers has organized a “Movie Under the Stars” evening to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
The Disney film “Up” will be shown at 7 p.m. April 30 in the Torrey Pines High School quad. A suggested donation is $10 for students, $15 for the public. Every ticket purchased will be entered into an opportunity drawing for a new Toshiba laptop computer. Torrey Pines freshman Emily Morgan and Canyon Crest Academy seniors Max Smiley and Aditi Trivedi thought the movie night would be a fun, unique way to fundraise for their cause.
The trio serves on the Curefinders youth board for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s San Diego and Imperial County chapter. Maria Olson, executive director, said the organization is excited with the students’ fundraising idea and thinks the young volunteers are “incredible.”
“We’re hoping for a big turnout,” Emily said. “We hope to continue this event each year if it goes well.”
Cystic fibrosis is a disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults. While life expectancy has increased as treatments have developed over the years, there is still no cure. Max said he decided to get involved with Curefinders because his cousin Ross has cystic fibrosis.
“It’s extremely hard on him,” said Max, describing how Ross has to wear a vibrating vest that helps clear the lungs from mucus buildup.
The students have been involved with Curefinders for two years, attending monthly meetings. “Our job is to recruit schools to do fundraisers to raise money to find a cure and raise awareness,” Aditi said.
One of the group’s popular fundraisers is a coin drive they run at local elementary schools.
Often, a young cystic fibrosis patient will come to the school to promote the drive; sometimes it is Hazel Remington, daughter of Canyon Crest teacher Mike Remington.
“The students get really involved and really care when they see another kid who has it,” Max said.
While the coin drives have been a big success for the CF Foundation, the high school district does not allow the drives, so the group had to come up with another way to fundraise at Canyon Crest and Torrey Pines.
At the movie night, the “rival” schools will compete to see which school can get the most students to attend and raise the most money. If a school raises more than $1,000, BJ’s restaurant will match the $1,000 donation and give an additional $1,000 to the school.
Tickets for the event can be bought at the door or in advance at cff.org/chapters/sandiego. Minors under 15 must have a parent or guardian present.
