Toyota announces voluntary recall of Sienna minivans

Toyota announced a voluntary recall Friday of about 600,000 Sienna minivans to correct potential corrosion in a spare-tire carrier cable.

According to the automaker, the corrosion could occur in certain 1998 through 2010 two-wheel drive Siennas that have been operated in cold climate areas where road salt is used.

“Continued prolonged exposure to road salts may cause excessive corrosion of the carrier cable in some of these vehicles,” according to a statement from Toyota. “In the worst case, the carrier cable may fail and the spare tire could become separated from the vehicle, a road hazard for following vehicles that increases the likelihood of a crash.

“Toyota is currently working to develop a remedy for this condition,” according to the automaker. “Until this remedy is developed, customers will receive an interim notice instructing them to bring their vehicle to a dealership for a preliminary inspection.”

The recall is directed to Sienna owners in the District of Columbia, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

Owners in other states will receive a separate notification giving details on how to have the minivan inspected, if they desire. The inspection will take approximately 30 minutes depending on the dealer’s work schedule.

Toyota has recalled 8.5 million vehicles since November for problems including floor mats that get tangled with the gas pedal and gas pedals that stick, causing sudden acceleration.
