Fashion Film Festival could be start of something big

It was standing room only at the Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery on Ivanhoe April 23 as local fashionistas and the curious crowed into the gallery to view the world’s first Fashion Film Festival, which premiered in La Jolla.

The vision of San Diego Model Management CEO Fred Sweet, the two-day event combined the showing of eight short fashion films and a post-party Friday night with next-day seminars, panel discussions, and the showing of seven more fashion films at the La Jolla Bridge Club, Saturday. A closing party was held at the Bull and Bear on Girard Avenue. An all-access pass to the event cost $90.

The question on most everyone’s lips Friday was, what exactly is fashion cinema? When the lights went down, the answer came quickly.

Exquisitely photographed and edited, each mini film became a high-styled stage for telling a short story through actors styled by famed designers, makeup and hair artists. Think fashion magazine layouts put to film with dialogue and music. The filmmakers working in this field are noted fashion photographers at the top of their games. Billed as “a new genre of art,” the fashion film has arrived.

But according to Sweet, it’s been a long time coming. As the curator of the show, Sweet said he watched thousands of fashion film shorts before selecting the ones presented. He traced the production of fashion films back to the late 1960s. Now, with the dawn of the Internet and YouTube, he said the industry is exploding.

The international films screened at the festival premiere were the works of (Friday) Robertino Fonseca, Carl Cortes, Jean-Claude Thibaut, Noam Griegst, Bruce Weber, Max Vadukul, Ellen Von Unwerth and Jamie Isaia, and (Saturday) George Manzanilla, Marisa Crawford, Christian Louboutin, Pamela Hansen, Janet Pytowski, Karl Langerfeld and Michael Haussman.

“It was great to be able to see something so unique,” said Cheryl Hyry of Encinitas after the Friday premiere. “I came as a friend of one of the models and I’m so glad I did.”
