Party benefits young readers

Rolling Readers will host its second annual “Artists & Authors” event at 6 p.m. June 19 at the New Children’s Museum in downtown San Diego. The party will bring together artists and children’s book authors to celebrate their work and raise money for Rolling Readers’ Read-Aloud and Book Giveaway programs. Wine, food and music will complete the event.

The Read-Aloud program sends 300 volunteers to some 450 high-need elementary school classrooms each week, while the Book Giveaway program annually puts more than 18,000 new books in the hands and homes of children who need them the most.”

The guest list includes Janell Cannon — the award-winning author/illustrator who created “Stellaluna”; Gerald McDermott — author/ illustrator whose vibrant picture books have received a Caldecott Medal, two Caldecott Honors, and many other awards; Brenda York, Theresa Vandenberg Donche and Annalu Boeretto — visual artists whose paintings are included in collections across the world.

The event will also feature a silent auction and have art and children’s books for sale. Tickets are $70 at (619) 516-4095 or www.rollingreaders.org.
