Patients sought for grief study

Complicated grief may affect as many as one of 10 individuals who have lost someone close to them.

Complicated grief is a bereavement reaction in which acute grief is prolonged, causing distress and interfering with functioning. The pain of the loss stays fresh and healing does not occur.

Sidney Zisook, M.D., and his team are conducting a research study to find out more about the effectiveness of psychotherapy with and without antidepressant medication, and of antidepressant medications with and without psychotherapy, to treat symptoms of complicated grief.

They are recruiting participants, age 18 and older, who have experienced the loss of a loved one, and are having emotional difficulties coping. The study is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
