Mondays in the park with organ music

The Spreckels Organ Society presents its 2010 Summer International Organ Festival featuring celebrated organists from around the world playing Monday evenings through Aug. 30 at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park.

All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free. Many concertgoers enjoy picnics in Balboa Park before the concerts. Light snacks, beverages and gifts are available at the pavilion grounds with proceeds benefiting the not-for-profit Spreckels Organ Society.

Wonder Woman Gets a Makeover

DC has given Wonder Woman a makeover with the help of a San Diego artist.

Those blue-Linda-Carter-briefs have been replaced with sexy leggings and boots. The 69-year old super hero now wears a jacket – which will ease the anxiety of many fans who always wondered where she carried everything.

“What woman only wears one outfit for 70 years? What woman doesn’t accessorize?” asks the DC Universe blog, The Source. “And more to the point, as many women have lamented over the years…how does she fight in that thing?”

Team USA tops Australia in international water polo tourney at La Jolla’s Coggan pool

FINA World Super League Final continues through Saturday

Team USA emerged winners over Australia, 15-14, in Tuesday’s FINA World League Super Final match at La Jolla’s Coggan Family Aquatic Center.

Teams from Russia, China, Greece, Canada, the Netherlands, Hungary are also competing. The final games will be played Saturday, with play each day starting at 2:30 p.m.

For the U.S. team, Emily Feher (Santa Ana, CA/NYAC) stopped two tries in the shootout to preserve a win for the United States on day two of. Lolo Silver (Long Beach, CA/NYAC) delivered the winner as the last shooter in the shootout following the last Australia miss for a one goal win, according to USA Water Polo’s website.

Supervisors OK regulations on where pot dispensaries can be located

A reluctant San Diego County Board of Supervisors gave final approval Wednesday to a package of regulations aimed at reining in medical marijuana outlets in unincorporated areas.

Pot activists said the rules were too strict, while government officials wanted an all-out ban on medical marijuana.

USD: Building permits, help wanted ads surge slightly in May

The University of San Diego’s Index of Leading Economic Indicators rose for the 14th consecutive month in May, led by a surge in building permits, it was announced Wednesday.

The index rose 0.2 percent in May, compared to the previous month, according to Alan Gin, who compiles the statistical measure for USD’s Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate.

DEA investigating Chargers, Padres physicians’ procedures

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration served 10 warrants in the San Diego area Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation into the professional practices of doctors who work for the Chargers and Padres.

The federal agency inspected the undisclosed facilities “in an attempt to verify the correctness of controlled-substance inventories, records, reports and other documents required to be kept” by the physicians, according to a DEA statement released Tuesday afternoon.

Another quake rattles Ocotillo area

Some East County residents may have felt a 3.6-magnitude aftershock that struck near Ocotillo early Wednesday but no damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The aftershock struck at 1:03 a.m. and was centered 7 miles southeast of Ocotillo, according to preliminary information from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Supervisors approve $4.95 billion county budget

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved a $4.95 billion spending plan for the 2010-11 fiscal year beginning Thursday, a drop of nearly 3 percent from the current year.

The supervisors approved a $5.2 billion budget at this time last year.

Judge blocks effort to stop La Jolla fireworks; attorney still targeting fair’s display

Just because an Encinitas environmental attorney is focusing his legal efforts on stopping La Jolla’s Fourth of July fireworks display doesn’t mean the Del Mar Fairgrounds will get off scot-free, he said Tuesday.

However, attorney Marco Gonzalez’s request for a temporary restraining order to block the La Jolla Cove show was rejected on Wedneday by Superior Court Judge Linda B. Quinn, who issued a tentative ruling denying the order, noting there was insufficient evidence to support the claim of irreparable environmental harm.

Region named a state Innovation Hub

San Diego has been designated the seventh and most recent Innovation Hub (iHub), part of a statewide initiative to stimulate regional partnerships, economic development and job creation built around research clusters.

In San Diego’s case, those clusters are mobile health, biofuels and solar energy and energy storage.
