Suspect in North County bank robberies arrested

By City News Service

A 20-year-old man was in custody Wednesday accused of robbing at least three North County banks in recent weeks, according to the FBI.

Oscar Omar Maldonado was arrested shortly after he allegedly used a demand note to rob a Bank of America branch office at 17008 Avenida De Acacias in Rancho Santa Fe around noon Friday, FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth said.

A second man, 32-year-old Luis Cueva, was later arrested on suspicion of participating in the same robbery, according to Foxworth, who did not elaborate on Cueva’s alleged involvement.

Maldonado was arrested on suspicion of robbing the Rancho Santa Fe bank and a Wells Fargo Bank office inside a San Marcos Albertsons grocery store on Sept. 30 and a U.S. Bank office, also in San Marcos, on Sept. 25. He and Cueva were both booked into the Vista jail.

The FBI is also investigating a possibly connected robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank office inside a Solana Beach Vons grocery store on June 7. Foxworth encouraged anyone with information related to the June robbery to call the FBI at (858) 565-1255.
