Del Mar: 28th annual holiday baskets program at fairgrounds to serve record numbers

DEL MAR — Community Resource Center’s 28th annual holiday baskets program is the largest comprehensive holiday distribution program of its kind in San Diego County, and will serve a record of over 5,500 people in need on Dec. 17, 18, and 19.

Hundreds of volunteers have transformed the Grandstands at the Del Mar Fairgrounds into a 20,000 square-foot shopping warehouse so that local families in need can experience “free” holiday shopping this season. Eligible North County families will fill their shopping carts or “baskets” with donated food, blankets, outerwear, toys, bicycles, baby items, and much more.

Over 200 groups and organizations and more than 1,600 volunteers have come together to brighten the holidays for over 1,400 households in the program. Despite critical gaps in donations earlier in the month, the community has rallied to ensure that all families in the program will receive a supply of food, and that every child and teen will receive a gift. “A lot of people are hurting this holiday season, but this community always comes through to help their neighbors,” says Laurin Pause, Community Resource Center (CRC) Executive Director.

Donations of gently used blankets, jackets, and baby items continue to arrive at the fairgrounds, and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department and community supporters are turning more than 200 used bikes into shiny new gifts for a few lucky children and teens.

  • Emotions tugged, tested in new Globe comedy about loss, Be a Good Little Widow
Bekah Brunstetter’s “Be a Good Little Widow” at The Old Globe is an interesting juxtaposition of happy and sad, reality and romanticism. The dialogue sometimes comes off as stilted, and I often felt that Melody’s character seemed very immature. However, the cast as a whole is terrific, and Hal Brooks’ direction centers the story well between the bookends of […]
