Del Mar minister writes prayer book geared toward youth
By Marlena Chavira-Medford
Del Mar resident Sharon Connors was called into ministry late in life. In the midst of a divorce, she found solace in a church, a place that would change the course of her life.
“It was at that church that I met a God of love and of hope,” she said. “That’s when I started to feel a little twinkling in my heart pulling me toward ministry and saying ‘You can do this.’” And she did. Connors went into ministry school as a single parent raising two young kids, something she said is “proof that it’s never too late in life to follow your heart.” Now, after 23 years as a minister, she has written “Adventures in Prayer: The Magic of Discovery,” a prayer book geared toward pre-teens. Here, she talks about her own spiritual journey, and what inspired her to write this book.
Connors currently ministers at Christ Church Unity of El Cajon, and previously served as senior minister at the Unity Church on the Unity International Campus in Kansas City, and senior minister at Unity of San Francisco and senior minister at Unity of Gainesville, Florida.
Entering ministry school as a newly-single parent must have been a challenge. What made you want to go through with it?
To be honest, when I first started considering ministry I thought it was little bit like a 12-year-old entertaining the idea of getting braces: I just knew it was going to ruin my life. But even after a year, I had this tugging in my heart that just wouldn’t leave me alone. So I told God I’d at least apply to ministry school and see what happened. When I got accepted, I just surrendered to that feeling in my heart. I had been a teacher for many years and I had run a few of my own little businesses and done some sales. I still use a lot of those same job skills as a minister.
What motivated you to write this book?
A few years ago I wrote a prayer book for adults because often people would tell me they just did not know how to pray. I was moved to write a book for adolescents because I saw so many young people lost and struggling. This book is geared toward kids 9 to 12 because that’s really the age when the temptations for sex and drugs, or they start to experience issues with bullying, body image, and self-esteem.
How do you hope this book will help kids cope with that stress?
I wrote this book with the hope of giving kids the tools they need to deal with real world pressures and heartache. That’s all built on a foundation that God is not a punishing God. I present a loving God. And I teach kids how to pray for guidance, and how to focus those prayers. The book also covers affirmations, because what you think about you bring about. It’s about focusing on the solution, not the problem. I also cover things like how to tell when God is guiding you, how to have positive relationships in life, and some ways of being grateful for what we have.
Is there anything you’d like to add about this book?
Most kids won’t walk into a bookstore and look for a book on prayer. But I think this book can be a real tool for spiritual educators so I hope parents will give it a try. I think it’s a book that can help give parents hope and be a resource as they navigate a challenging time in their children’s lives. The bottom line is that I firmly believe that prayer will help people make their lives what they want them to be.
