Del Mar Highlands Town Center movie theater to close Jan. 3 for renovation

The movie theater at Del Mar Highlands Town Center will close effective Jan. 3, 2011 to undergo a renovation in which the existing UltraStar 8 will be upgraded and converted to a new luxury boutique concept.

The new upgraded theater will offer many new perks including the convenience of reserved seating, which allows movie patrons to reserve specific seats for any showing ahead of time. Also among the theater’s features are: eight auditoriums featuring stadium seating with luxury high-back reclining chairs; state-of-the-art digital screens with 3D capability; in-seat food ordering; a cinema café offering an assortment of gourmet movie fare; and online ticketing. The movie theater will reopen in conjunction with the grand reopening of the Del Mar Highlands Town Center in summer of 2011.

“The movie theater renovation is an important part of the overall re-imagining of the Del Mar Highlands Town Center,” said Elizabeth Schreiber, vice president and general manager for Donahue Schriber, owner and operator of the Del Mar Highlands Town Center. “We believe the new luxury theater will enhance the guest experience at Del Mar Highlands Town Center while providing the community additional entertainment options in the heart of Carmel Valley.”

In June, Donahue Schriber unveiled plans for a re-imagined Del Mar Highlands Town Center, a renovation of the 20-year old center that will provide family-oriented amenities including intimate gathering spaces that create a sense of neighborhood, increased variety of quality dining, shopping and entertainment options, and improved parking, traffic flow and pedestrian experience within and beyond the Del Mar Highlands Town Center. The first phase of the renovation was completed last month and January marks the beginning of the final phase, which includes a remodel of the amphitheater that will offer new and improved social gathering spaces.

Donahue Schriber recently announced that three new restaurants will open at the re-imagined center — Rimel’s Rotisserie, an Asian and Mexican inspired mesquite, wood-fired grill and rotisserie restaurant; The Counter, a 21st Century version of a burger joint complete with custom-built burgers; and Carmel Valley Swirls, a healthy frozen yogurt shop. Additional leases are expected to be announced soon.
