Del Mar Mayor Don Mosier reflects on 2010

Del Mar Mayor Don Mosier

As 2010 draws to a close, it is time to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year and to prepare for the rapidly approaching new year. I want to acknowledge not what we did this past year, but how we did it. Del Mar is a special place, and it is special because so many citizens and city staff work hard to make our village better. It was a pleasure to celebrate the holiday season with our city employees on Dec. 16, meet their families, congratulate them for their accomplishments this past year, and ask for their help as we move forward next year. This is a truly dedicated group of individuals who perform their duties so flawlessly that most of their work goes unnoticed.

I also want to acknowledge how many volunteers we have in Del Mar, both on council advisory committees and nonprofit fundraising organizations. I am reminded of JFK’s inaugural speech, “ask not what your country (city) can do for you, ask what you can do for your country (city).” That spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in Del Mar, and it is absolutely essential for accomplishing our shared goals. The holiday season is a time of joy to be shared with family and friends, but this year is tinged with sadness for the loss of several of our citizens who embodied the Del Mar spirit of helping others. These are the gifts that matter, the gifts of giving to our community so that all may benefit.
I wish everyone a happy holiday season, and I look forward to your continued efforts and dedication to our community in 2011.
