Del Mar workshop to consider solid waste and recycling collection improvements

A community workshop will be held on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at Del Mar City Hall Annex. The city of Del Mar is conducting a Request for Proposals for solid waste and recycling collection to ensure that residents receive high quality and economical collection service while also making it easier to “green” the city by diverting more materials through recycling, composting and waste prevention.

Among the changes the city will be considering will be a change to a “pay-as-you-throw” collection rate structure, where residents who dispose less will pay less, and residents who dispose more will pay more. Pay-as-you-throw rate structures have been demonstrated to significantly improve recycling. Other proposed changes include a conversion to semi-automated collection with standardized wheeled carts for both disposal and recycling.

In addition, staff is proposing programs for composting education and bin subsidies, and recycling assistance to business to help them craft programs which allow them to improve their contribution to the city’s overall recycling percentage. If you are unable to attend the workshop, please send suggestions/questions to Recycle@delmar.ca.us.

  • Emotions tugged, tested in new Globe comedy about loss, Be a Good Little Widow
Bekah Brunstetter’s “Be a Good Little Widow” at The Old Globe is an interesting juxtaposition of happy and sad, reality and romanticism. The dialogue sometimes comes off as stilted, and I often felt that Melody’s character seemed very immature. However, the cast as a whole is terrific, and Hal Brooks’ direction centers the story well between the bookends of […]
