Ever wish there was a contraption to help pick up toys after a day of play? How about a wooden elephant with a trunk to hang your glasses on? Creative youngsters unveiled those useful inventions and more at an Invention Showcase at Ashley Falls on Feb. 9.

Kindergartners through third-graders displayed their inventions and gave a presentation to an audience about their inspiration and use.

Siblings Abby and Drew Beamer were the minds behind the elephant glasses holder and the EZ Toy Picker Upper, which works by scooping up toys in a long shovel — no pesky bending required.

Isabella Hirst was very expressive explaining her “Color Truth” invention, which allows young artists to find out what colors they need to make other colors — put a dot of marker underwater and the color mixture will bleed out.

Addie Picker invented the “Night Time Organizer” as she said she is very “unhappy”when she goes to bed and something like this could help fellow unhappy people at bedtime. The carrier keeps a flashlight, book, tissue paper, sleeping mask, water bottle and a snack close at hand in special compartments.

Maya Rosenbaum created a tag to affix to backpacks for everything children brought to school so they don’t forget to bring any of it back home. Maya’s tag read “jacket, library book, necklace.”

Meli Trikounakis invented a hair remover, which sweeps across the carpet and picks up dog and American Girl doll hair.

Brothers Michael, Justin and Dylan Vaughn created a river carrier, submarine and a boat, all featuring plastic tennis ball bottles in their designs.

“It all started with my mom dumping down a lot of tennis bottles and I got the idea so I made it,” said Justin of his boat.

Jasper Bloom created a bulldozer out of cardboard—not just any old bulldozer, it also has a little drawer on the side for storing small toys and trinkets.

Perhaps the most ambitious of the bunch, Ravi Gopinathan created a solar-paneled cell service —a balloon that he said could hover over events such as Chargers games to provide service for attendees. He even thought to include an option for companies to advertise on the balloon to boost revenue.

  • What were the odds?
I think we’d all agree that no one should have to worry about being run over by a motor vehicle in their own shower. I’m a world class worrier but until it almost happened, it never occurred to me to worry that a stolen car would crash through our front fence and stop inches from joining me in the master bath. This wasn’t recent, fortunately, but it comprise […]
