Del Mar/Solana Beach Optimist Club to hold annual Oratorical Contest

On Saturday, April 2, the Del Mar/Solana Beach Optimist Club will hold its annual Oratorical Contest for boys and girls under the age of 19. The contest will be held at the Calvary Lutheran Church, 424 Via De La Valle, Solana Beach, at 9 a.m. Each year this event attracts young speakers who compete for cash prizes and a possible opportunity to participate in the District finals, in which the winner will earn a $2,500 scholarship. This year’s topic is: “If I were Leader of the Free World, the First Issue I would Address would be…” The contest is open to the public. We encourage the community to attend and view these wonderful young people as they learn about public speaking in front of a live audience.

The Del Mar/Solana Beach Optimists are dedicated to assisting the youth of the coastal communities with various projects in addition to this contest. Their weekly Wednesday breakfast meetings are held at 7 a.m. at Denny’s on Via Del la Valle, and their monthly dinner meeting is held at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. Meetings always feature an interesting speaker from the community at large.
